Don Low
Singapore

Though Don was born & bred in Singapore, he has never gotten used to the hot & humid climate here. And unlike locals, he has never successfully enjoyed chilly and spicy food without working out a sweat. Therefore he longed to live in the northern part of the earth's hemisphere or the south where he could see a change of seasons and where the weather is not as harsh. Don is basically a self taught artist and an engineer by training.

In 2006 he was awarded a MDA Media Education Scheme scholarship to pursue an overseas graduate studies in animation. In addition he interned and worked a year for The Walt Disney Company Imagineer/Parks & Resorts Online as a Visual Development / Concept Artist.

“I am an animator. I feel like I'm the manager of a animation cinema factory. I am not an executive. I'm rather like a foreman, like the boss of a team of craftsmen. That is the spirit of how I work.”
--- Hayao Miyazaki.

Character Coloring Video

A continuation of what I have done before — this video shows the process of adding color on another layer behind the layer containing the line work.

Design my Character to be used in a Journal Book

I basically need a character that represents me well, and that is easy and quick to draw. Here’s the process and a page of the doodle. I would keep doing it until I find one that works well and when I could simply draw one without looking at any reference — like committing to memory [...]

Breakfast @ Jago Close

One of the things I look forward to doing with my wife is going for breakfast on a weekend. We would suggest and explore different ideas and locations to where we would have it. One of the most important consideration would be the quality of food. The next would be the environment. We would prefer [...]

Sketching after Lunch

Before I live here, I have never imagined how this place may look like. When the entire island of Singapore clamors for upgrading and building taller high-rises, places such as this has retained its original state for many years. I am really amazed by some of the buildings here that have not given way to [...]

A Design Process Revealed

The design process is always a mystery to many designers, artists and so forth, even including enthusiasts from the non-artist category.  Basically the design process precludes Research and Discovery. Then according to Stopdesign.com, this would be followed by: Competitive Analysis: … this process involves looking at pre-existing ideas and executions created by peers, mentors, heros, [...]

Coffeeshop Talk Uncles

We coined conversations held in coffeeshops, coffeeshop talks. Usually coffeeshop talks are carried out by, stereotypically, uncles, middle aged men who are either cab drivers or blue collars. The conversations span from politics to domestic squabbles. It is usually fun to listen to them but there is no need to trust everything they say. Most [...]

Sunday — A Day of Rest

Rest means going to church to hear what God has to say to me. Today Pastor told us what God has told him: “Restful Increase, the year of restful increase.” All we need to do to receive this increase is to labor unto God’s rest. This is good but what is better is that our [...]
