Click thumbnails for a bigger view. Once green light is given, it is time to create the individual elements. First a picture of my hand is taken (unfortunately I do not have a budget to hire a hand model, so I have to make do with my own hand) and it is taken to Photoshop for cropping and adding some simple efx. During the process, the editor thought the hand used within the graphic is too fat, so I have to “tweak” it in PS again.

The efx are just creating high contrast and adding color half tones… which is very ez to do within PS. Next is to create the game machine. I am using the Game Gear as an example. There is nothing special to the process, just simple airbrushing and drawing the individual elements.

It may look tedious but if you can do it fast enough it may not be the case. Using the same method I went ahead to create the gadget illustrations for PSP4 Go and Game Watch. Yes I have fun and I used references from pictures I found on the internet.

I am going to skip to the final illustrations.

These are the final illustrations. Different color schemes and graphic designs are used for different mobile gaming gadgets.

Everything was worth the time and energy. The turn out for the exhibition was overwhelming. Food was great (though I did not manage to get a bite) and the music has enlivened a sleepy Tiong Bahru. I am both glad and pleased that we have decided to do this – a gallery show of our sketches. At first I do not think this would be possible because we thought it would be inappropriate to display sketches from our sketchbooks. These are unfinished works and they are very personal. But my skepticism was proven wrong. People do enjoy looking at sketches. Someone told me these sketches are like a memory, a moment captured on paper, a fleeting emotions of a location and so forth. They were right.

Dr Sketchy isn’t about being an amazing artist, as long as you can put pencil to paper and move it around that’s good enough for us and you never know you might just unleash that artist inside.

It’s what art classes would be if the class was let loose in the Moulin Rouge.

Hopefully this is okay to appear on Facebook. Anyway I did some similar life drawing sessions but not Dr Sketchy when I was living in Glendale. Dr Sketchy was held in LA but it is a 40 mins drive to town whereas the one I went was organized by Pasadena Art Center’s professor for the working artists living in the Burbank and Glendale area. Models are clothed too. You can see the events here – Glendale Drawing Club. When I was heading back home last year, I wished there is something like this, but little did I know that there is already Dr Sketchy in Singapore. Well this is the result of a 3-hour life drawing session.

Japan Gourmet Town

There is a Japan Gourmet Town in Raffles City Basement. One of the outlet is like Mache, you pick a card at the entrance and buy stuff with it, then pay later when you exit. Food is a pricey and reasonable in taste. Not so spectacular that I will develop a craving but nice enough to think about it once in a while. In conclusion, nothing beats hawkers’ food, in terms of price and taste. Restaurants in Singapore, OK lah.

And just another page from my sketchbook. This was done over breakfast on a Saturday, when the house was peaceful and quiet. It seemed like everyone was out that morning and it was just the two of us in the kitchen. No mom’s relentless bantering of how and where she bought her eggs, her chicken and her bargain from NTUC; or her overflowing grudge against my dad-in-law, on how he would spent all his money on that “lady” and how he hasn’t cared much about his own family and etc. Never endless complaining and mumbling. It is by the grace of God I wasn’t affected and I wasn’t even pitying her at all. Well she drove away her son and daughter-in-law not long ago, the latter who called mum a psychotic woman and refused to let her see the grand son for the last 3 years. Drama!! Who needs to watch a drama series on TV!!
